NASCAR postponed The Great American Race after heavy rain saturated Daytona International Speedway on Sunday.
Officials spent more than four hours waiting for a window to dry the famed track, but it never came. And when the latest storm cell passed over the speedway, they had little choice but to call it a day and reschedule.
The 500-mile race was rescheduled for noon Monday. It will be aired on Fox.
"This is one of the toughest things for us drivers," pole-sitter Carl Edwards said. "It's now who can really stay focused. That's not just the drivers, that's the pit crews, the crew chiefs, everyone, the officials. But I think we'll be just fine."
But Monday may be another test for both drivers and fans.
The forecast calls for more rain, and officials are prepared to wait all day and into the night to avoid a Tuesday race.
"The longer runway we have tomorrow to get in the Daytona 500, the greater the likelihood for us to start and finish the event on Monday," NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said. "There are certainly a lot of considerations that go into the start time decision, and we believe scheduling it for noon gives us the best opportunity for us to get the race in tomorrow."
Eight previous Daytona 500s have endured rain delays, the latest in 2009. But never before had storms forced NASCAR's premier event to be moved."I think that's a pretty good record for NASCAR," Edwards said. "They've been living right to have 53 of these and never have one postponed. That's pretty spectacular. ... I think NASCAR, they're doing the right thing, you know, not dragging this out."
Noontime showers sent fans scattering for cover and leaving everyone in wait-and-see mode. Puddles of water formed in parts of the infield, and many fans got drenched as they tried to make the best of a less-than-ideal situation.
Drivers retreated to their motorhomes, relaxing while keeping an eye on developments. Edwards, Brad Keselowski and others took naps. Former Daytona 500 winners Jamie McMurray and Trevor Bayne did in-studio interviews with Fox. Another previous race winner, Ryan Newman, played with his daughter in the motorhome lot.
"I guess I'm gonna have to win the first Monday Daytona 500," driver Greg Biffle said. "As you can tell, I'm still in my uniform because I was optimistic that this weather was gonna get out of here and we were going to get this thing going. But I'll have to save my energy for tomorrow.
"I know a lot of race fans are disappointed and a lot of people at home on TV, but we just hope they turn in tomorrow."

Tundra driver John King earned his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) victory in Friday night's 250-mile race at Daytona International Speedway.King's win marks the sixth consecutive victory for a Tundra at Daytona International Speedway.
Friday night's NCWTS race marked King's eighth career start in the series and first of his career at Daytona.
Timothy Peters (second), Travis Kvapil (fourth), Todd Bodine (sixth) and Chris Fontaine (seventh) also finished in
the top-10 driving Tundras at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

How did the race progress? "We got out of the draft early. Just stayed with it -- got lucky, got a caution and got back up. Stayed right on my yellow brick road and just made it up towards the front. I apologize to Johnny Sauter -- I shouldn't have been there because I am so inexperienced. Here we are."
What happened between you and Johnny Sauter? "I closed up on him real fast -- I was in the tri-oval and I couldn't get off of him. I closed up on him too fast and just wrecked him. Just inexperience -- rookie mistake."

Taking the fuel. John (King) did an awesome job coming onto pit road and coming around. He had to come around the 19 (Brad Keselowski) twice to take fuel. One time we got blocked in by the truck in front of us. But we stuck to our plan. This truck has won this race -- this is the second time. It won in 2010 with Timothy Peters. I guess it's ironic Timothy helped push us to this win with John in it. John's a great, great kid -- awesome to work with. I mean, you put somebody in good equipment, they have a good head on them -- I guess you always have a shot."

J.K. Rowling's New Book Can Take From 'Harry Potter'
Hallelujah, J.K. Rowling is officially releasing a new book. Sure, no title, however, has no release date, and mockery of the "details will be announced later this year" could mean a variety of things. But the author, whose only legacy is now the beloved "Harry Potter book finally released the album a new novel - this time for adults - and I could not be happier.
Although this novel is going to tilt toward older audiences, there are still many elements of "Harry Potter" which Rowling can make more in a new series. Though I suppose that this new book not likely to include children as well as "Harry Potter" did, there are still plenty of other components that worked very well in that series and is likely to work even better in the history of adult .
Strong female characters
It's no surprise that Rowling enjoys writing about women who can maintain their weight with the kids. Hermione Granger was certainly more powerful than his two cohorts, Harry and Ron, and several times was the trio's most mature character. I hope that Rowling includes equally strong female characters in his new novel, perhaps even in the title role.
A love triangle
Well, what the fans have made Harry, Ron and Hermione romantic relationship over the reality of what actually was (thanks for that, Harry and Hermione shippers), but there are many love triangles that take place in "Harry Potter". Lily, Snape and Harry James, Cho and Cedric had a lot of romantic tension going on in the previous series Rowling. Well, why not go all out and have a full-blown love triangle in a novel aimed at adults? I'm not talking about what is the point of the plot that hinges on books like "The Twilight Saga" or "The Hunger Games", but now we are adults Rowling. Rowling might have seen most of the world, now thanks to their numerous tours of Harry Potter books, but his house is still the UK. "Harry Potter" is definitely a British history, and I would like to see the next book in Rowling follow suit. Having said that, "Harry Potter" walked the line between family demonstrated (King's Cross Station) and unknown (Hogwarts) places in Britain. Here's hoping that Rowling takes us on a similar journey in his next novel, and takes us somewhere you've never been before.
Magical Items
There are probably people out there who prefer the new book, Rowling did not involve magic in all its forms. I am not one of those people. In all likelihood, Rowling kept away from the magic in his book for adults in order to differentiate it from the "Potter", but there are many forms of magic can manifest. Although I love to see Rowling against an entirely new theme would still be nice to have some kind of supernatural component in the game.
Darkness
The darkness in "Harry Potter" is a big part of what made the book so powerful. I have long said that the change of "Potter" is done in 'Goblet of Fire ", which is the first book in the series that has a sad ending, but the darkness can find a way to start again "Philosopher's Stone '. It is difficult to expect that Rowling could write a novel for adult soft and fluffy after developing a series of darker children of our time, and I think it will be really exciting to see how dark it can make a book without having to care for a young audience.

Having said that, "Harry Potter" walked the line between family demonstrated (King's Cross Station) and unknown (Hogwarts) places in Britain. Here's hoping that Rowling takes us on a similar journey in his next novel, and takes us somewhere you've never been before.
Magical Items
There are probably people out there who prefer the new book, Rowling did not involve magic in all its forms. I am not one of those people. In all likelihood, Rowling kept away from the magic in his book for adults in order to differentiate it from the "Potter", but there are many forms of magic can manifest. Although I love to see Rowling against an entirely new theme would still be nice to have some kind of supernatural component in the game.
Darkness
The darkness in "Harry Potter" is a big part of what made the book so powerful. I have long said that the change of "Potter" is done in 'Goblet of Fire ", which is the first book in the series that has a sad ending, but the darkness can find a way to start again "Philosopher's Stone '. It is difficult to expect that Rowling could write a novel for adult soft and fluffy after developing a series of darker children of our time, and I think it will be really exciting to see how dark it can make a book without having to care for a young audience.

Scores die in Argentina train crash
A packed train has crashed into the end of the track in a Buenos Aires railway station, killing at least 49 commuters and injuring more than 500 others, with the death toll expected to rise.
The train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 20km per hour, smashing the front of the engine and destroying the coaches behind it, Juan Schiavi, Argentina's transportation secretary, said at the Once station on Wednesday.
"There are people still trapped, people alive, and there may have been fatalities. We don't know if there are dead people" in the wreckage, Schiavi said.
One coach penetrated nearly 20ft into the next, he said.
Monica Yanakiev, a journalist at the scene of the train crash, told Al Jazeera, that "there are between 30 and 60 people still trapped in the train", with ambulances filling the streets.
"The last report, which has not been confirmed yet, is that a seven-year-old boy apparently died in the crash," she said. "There are three or four hospitals that are crowded with victims" of the accident that occured during rush hour.
Injured by metal and glassMost damaged was the first coach, where passengers make space for bicycles. Survivors told the TeleNoticias television channel that many people were injured by metal and glass.
Passengers said windows exploded as the tops of train cars separated from their floors. The trains are usually packed with people standing between the seats, and many were thrown into each other and to the floor by the force of the hard stop.
Rescue workers searched for survivors after Wednesday's accident at the Once railway station
"People started to break windows and get out however they could." one survivor said.
"Then I saw the engine destroyed and the train driver trapped among the steel. There were a lot of people hurt, a lot of kids, elderly."
Many people suffered bruises, and many with lesser injuries were waiting for attention on the Once station's platforms as helicopters and more than a dozen ambulances took the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals.
The driver has been taken to a hospital and the union has not been able to speak to him yet, Sobrero said.
Ruben Sobrero, union chief on the Sarmiento line, the commuter rail service in Buenos Aires, told local media that reports speculating the crash was caused by the train's inability to stop fast enough due to brake problems could not be verified.
"This machine left the shop yesterday and the brakes worked well," he said.
"From what we know, it braked without problems at previous stations. At this point I don't want to speculate about the causes."
Argentina has seen five serious train accidents since December 2010. The most deadly of these happened last September, when a bus crossed the tracks in front of an oncoming train, killing 11 people.

Supreme Court Wades Into Affirmative Action Issue
The U.S. Supreme Court said Tuesday it will revisit the issue of affirmative action in higher education. The Court agreed to hear arguments this fall in a case challenging the affirmative action program at the University of Texas. Returning to enter the fray after more than thirty years of settled law on the subject, most newly energized conservative court has signaled that might be willing to destabilize much of that law.
Nine years ago, the high court, by a vote of 5 to 4, affirmed the decision 1978 stating that the race can be one of the many factors that can be considered in college admissions.
The author of this opinion, 2003, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, said the quotas, while they are not allowed, "racial diversity is an essential part of the mission of higher education", and therefore the race can be a positive factor, as the son of a student may be one factor, or have athletic talent or musical.
But just two years after writing that historical opinion, O'Connor retired and was replaced by Justice Samuel Alito, who has been fairly consistent hostile to the idea of racial preferences in any form.
So when the Supreme Court decided on Tuesday to discuss the issue, the suggestion was that a clear majority of the court more conservative again and might be willing to invest or severely reduced by more than three decades of precedent regarding affirmative action in college and university admissions.
Alito addition, three other judges have been openly antagonistic to the idea of affirmative action, Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia, and Chief Justice John Roberts. In a 2007 opinion, Roberts wrote that the racial balance in schools "can not be transformed into a constitutional practice calling it diversity" and diversity is precisely the goal of the Texas program at all levels, to the salon classes.
The fifth potential vote against Texas would be Justice Anthony Kennedy, which has generally taken a less hostile tone. However, Kennedy has never voted for a voluntary affirmative action.
To complicate matters even bleaker for supporters of affirmative action is the fact that only eight judges hear the case. Justice Elena Kagan has apologized for before his nomination to the Court, when he served as attorney general of the Obama administration, his office was involved in the case during the proceedings of lower courts.
The claim of Texas action program is a hybrid. Most students slots are allocated by formula. Students in 10 percent of students graduating from high school earning automatic. About 81 percent of school slots were allocated in this way almost four years, when the lawsuit was filed on behalf of a student named Abigail Fisher disappointed.
Fisher was not in the top 10 percent of their graduating high school class, and she said she was disadvantaged by the system used to elect the remaining 19 percent of the students. That's where race is considered, along with grades, a personal essay, nature, special talents and special circumstances such as socioeconomic status of the student's family.
Fisher argued that because it had a higher average scores than some minority students who were accepted, she was the victim of unlawful discrimination. Two courts, however, disagreed, and upheld affirmative action program of the university.

The Seabiscuit Factor
The recent embracing and rooting for the “UNDERDOGS” with the likes of Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin brought me to the thought that we have seen this at least once before. It is not a unique event.
Before these two, there was a race horse named Seabiscuit. Just as Tim Tebow was not considered good enough to be a franchise NFL quarterback, nor was Jeremy Lim talented enough to even play in the NBA; Seabiscuit was not thought to be of enough quality breeding to be a contender for the major horse racing events across the country.
In the 1930’s, Seabiscuit was a horse who had claimed the admiration and identification linking with the working Middle Class segment of society. Seabiscuit came from an inauspicious start, and became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many working Middle Class American Citizens during the Great Depression.It should not be surprising that in our current “Great Depression 2.0,” we are seeing the same working Middle Class shouting the accolades of these two young men. The citizens of this nation are finding an identification with Tim and Jeremy because working Middle Class Americans know that it will not be the “Entitled & Elite 1% Thoroughbred Ruling Classes” that is going to get this country out of our current economic situation. No, it will be the same working Middle Class citizens who pulled us out of the Great Depression mess back then to be cleaned up by the workers that was caused by the abuses of the 1% back then too. The working Middle Class citizens have to clean up this current mess and pull ourselves up by the bootstraps.

And she opened on a very personal: her recent miscarriage.
"That was a very emotional experience," said Bethenny Frankel of the tragedy that claimed the life of her fetus from eight weeks old. "Until I become a woman, not the things that come with it."

"The window is closing, and is something I'm dealing with," Frankel said simply.

Offseason Questions Are Plentiful
October 7, 2011 - New York Yankees began their season today, much sooner than expected. It will be a season full of questions, as against a list of aging, an uncertain pitching staff and a general manager who has no contract beyond this year. Here are several questions that have to deal with the Yankees before the 2012 MLB season rolls around.
1. The future of Brian Cashman, GM's contract expires at the end of the month. He says he wants to stay, and the organization has said it wants to stay. Cashman has been GM since 1998, who could blame him if he was tempted to go elsewhere and find out if he can build a team without the resources Steinbrenner. 2. CC Sabathia: The big lefty has a clause in his contract, and although it seems almost certain he wants to stay a Yankee bet he will exercise it. This puts the Yankees in a very bad place. They are paying a lot of ways worse long-term contracts that will take players far beyond their seasons in full production. Sabathia opting out and holding the Yankees over the canyon for another is a problem. If the Yankees do not pony as whatever you want that stick without an ace in the short term. If they do want to pony up what Sabathia will likely be stuck paying the 31-year-old, 300-pound Sabathia huge money long after the break.
3. Jorge Posada: The question is not whether Posada will be back with the Yankees. It does not, and seem to know. The question is, can the Yankees goodbye to the proud 40-year-old veteran, without a bitter separation?
4. Nick Swisher: The energy of 30-year-old right fielder is a free agent. Do the Yankees want him back? Or let him go for an upgrade? Swisher is limited to the defensive, do not throw well and has a .169 batting average batting in 38 playoff games with six RBIs. The Yankees might be better served by here looking for a young, athletic player.
5. What about the status of the capture? Russell Martin had an excellent year for the Yankees, despite his .237 batting average does not indicate that. Martin was taken to the Yankees in a one-year contract, however, so it can be a free agent. There will be plenty of teams willing to offer 28 years of age, a long-term contract. If the Yankees to be one of them? If they do, how does that impact perspectives capture Jesus Montero, Austin Romine and Gary Sanchez? If they do, leaving Martin, can Montero, Francisco Cervelli Romine and do the job?
6. What about Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon? The Yankees got far more than the two outcasts veteran than I ever could have expected. Was it enough, however, so they can take advantage of any of these guys again for another year? Probably not, but that depends on the answer to the next question.
7. After Sabathia, what happens to the starting rotation? Ivan Nova stepped forward, and if his forearm strain is nothing worse than that, have a rotation spot in 2012. Who will? Can the Yankees via trade or free agency, find another front of the pitcher starting rotation to take some pressure off Sabathia? Can you find someone who A.J. Burnett of his hands? You can count on Phil Hughes, or should try another package in a deal? Do any of the acclaimed young pitching prospects ready to take its place in the rotation? Many questions, no easy answers.
8. Alex Rodriguez is officially an albatross? A-Rod is coming off the worst season of his career with just 16 homers and 62 RBIs in 99 games. He came up small again in the postseason. He turns 37 next season, and wonder exactly how Rodriguez has been in the tank is a fair question.
